The 1998 NHL Expansion Draft welcoming the Nashville Predators represents the ninth time the leauge has expanded since 1967.
The 10th and 11th expansions are set for 1999 (Atlanta Thrashers) and 2000 (Minnesota Wild, Columbus Blue Jackets). The
Predators are joining the Western Conference's Central Division. Listed below is the various ways the 26 current NHL teams
are allowed to protect their players from the draft.

- 1 Goalie, 6 Defensemen, 9 Forwards
- 1 Goalie, 5 Defensemen, 10 Forwards
- 2 Goalies, 4 Defensemen, 7 Forwards
- 2 Goalies, 3 Defensemen, 8 Forwards
